CLASS PICNIC REPORT

This project was a good way to teach how to plan our ideas.. In the project we had to plan the menu, the shopping list, and we had to plan which items we would buy so we could stay within the budget of $200. I stayed within well the budget. My total for the whole lunch was $198.60. Not including the extra red fancy apple I bought for our teacher for 95 cents, $12.35 was spent on each child.  Here is how I calculated it.

I used graphs to illustrate my results and findings. But even before the graphs I had to organize the food bought into categories and calculate the total spent on each category.

First I made the bar graph. On the y axis I put the total amounts spent for each category of food. On the x axis I put each category. Next I plotted the bars for the food categories vertically. Last I added the title and colors of the bars.

The second graph I made was a pie chart. To do this chart I first had to find what percentage of all the total money was spent for each category of food. To do this I first divided the amount of money spent on the food category I was finding the percentage for by $198.60 then multiplied it by 100. Here is the algebra for this with “A” as the total spent on the food category I am finding the percent for and “B” as the percent. A / 198.60 * 100=       B.   Here is one example of the workings. It is for the percentage of the total spent on sandwiches. I used this same method to calculate the percentage of total spent on each food category.

This budgeting project has taught me the importance of the skill of budgeting my money when buying items in stores. This is an important skill everyone should have as it benefits them in real life. It will also help me plan out my thoughts better so I can get more effective ideas to work with.

If I were to do this project again there are a few things I would do differently. One of these is that I would have printed and glued my items and the information on my poster as soon as I was sure that I was finished making all my changes. I would have  rechecked the items I was planning on buying before I added them to my cart, that way later on when I was organizing my items to print and put on my poster I would not have needed to go back and make so many changes.

This exercise also helped me recognize my weaknesses and strengths. One weakness I encountered was my lack of knowledge of unit amounts and quantities for examples ounces, liters or gallons. I was unsure how many people one head of lettuce would serve in a salad. I had to figure that out.

While doing this project I also recognized some of my strengths. I am very good at planning ahead and it keeps my thoughts and work organized. I am also good at arranging things neatly into the right categories. I am good at thinking analytically and visualizing graphs or pictures in my mind. This helped me decide on the best way to represent my findings.
